TechCrunch meet in Taipei

Held in a bar in Taipei's night life district. It's somewhat noisy due to the nature of this place, but the food, drink and atmosphere are OK. I'm sitting in it with many friends listening to new startup presentations and getting drunk with a glass of white wine. ;)

On the way to the class

I have an hour of Japanese conversation class every Monday night. It's kind of tiring to have the intensive hour after a day at work, but I still see it as an escape from the routine life, since I usually leave my atelier early and find a café near the classroom to read, write or have a puff of cigar.

Although I've learned several languages in my young years, and Mr. Higa, my teacher from Okinawa, is a really nice person, but I've still found myself nervous when he talked to me (and expected my answer) in Japanese.

Well, maybe that's exactly the thrilling thing to be a student, and I enjoy it very much.

Taipei, circa 1971

This is Taipei around it Ximenting (西門町, the "West Gate District") where used to be heart of the city since Taiwan's Japanese occupation period (1895-1945), and it's also the neighborhood where I was born.

So familiar with the sights, I can even recognize many shops and signs in the photos. To be more specific, I was born in the second building of Chung-hwa market (中華商場, appeared on the left hand side of the 6th photo), a huge market row formed by eight long buildings. The market was destroyed around 1991 when I lived in the States; it's sad to see it go when I couldn't be there, but its disappearance was also an opportunity for a new Ximenting to be reborn from its ashes.
