Recruiting Transformers.

The recruiting TV advertisement of Taiwan's Armed Forces.

It's apparantly a "Transformer rip-off", and like the original Hollywood film, the responses are of two extremes. People like it call it "cool" and attractive to younger people, while others call it "deceiving" and "misleading", and say the authority should spend the money on improving the real stuff, since the jarheads recruited by this film may end up finding themselves greasing World War II-era bazookas in their barracks.

Well, as a country moving from conscription to all-voluntary armed forces, cool TV commercial is better than nothing as long as it didn't cost too much. Paying tribute to aliens is better than to the adversary. Isn't it?

Hey, it's AIM-120C on the F-16's wing-tip pylons!

Pot stickers

Two good things to have living in Taiwan:

 1. We have spicy pot stickers that are traditional Chinese pot stickers with Korean kimchi in the filling. That's where innovation kicks in.

 2. You can have a whole bunch of the pot stickers and a bowl of fish ball soup for merely US$4. That's what we call living standard. :)

Quick dinner

On my way to the evening Japanese class, I had a pancake for dinner, Taiwanese style of course.

It's also called "tossed pancake" here, as the preparing process requires some tossing to make it soft and fluffy.

Chinese basil and pickled cabbage were added for more taste, and the optional NT$5 egg was an even more welcomed addition to the feat.

Oh yes, Taiwanese soy sauce, which is a little bit sweeter and sticky than what you may have had, is also an indispensible touch to the fulfilling experience. All these can be yours for only US$0.90 to go. Nice.

"Dispute" between Ma and DoD

As what I've predicted in a previous post:

The loss could lead to US sales of UH-60 heli to Taiwan to reinvigorate the aging air service fleets, both military and civilian, but it's a price too much to pay. However if it's really it, may more lives can be saved in the future. Of course, no need for this would be the best thing to hope for.

Taiwan is getting its long-overdue UH-60 Blackhawk helicoptor fleet probably because of the Morakot typhoon that revealed the inadequacy of the current 40-year-old UH-1Hs.

However the procurement has ignited another "dispute" (title: "Military purchasing 60 Blackhawks, a 'slap' on Ma's face") between Prez Ma and the DoD (which the minister had already pledged to resign). In fact, there are not too many inconsistencies between Ma and the DoD, but how they express the same thing and deal with each other are worth watching. As the top marshal of the armed forces, Ma should pay more attention on his relation with the DoD and the rationale of his decisions.

Taiwan Prez Office Web site hacked.

The usual news releases were replaced by a parody video showing men with heads of the Prez and top officials dancing.

The video was actually for a song called "Sorry Sorry" performed by a Korean idol group; it's chosen for the parody because many people consider the Prez and Taiwanese government being slow and ineffective during the Aug. 8 Morakot typhoon, and they should hold the responsibility and say "sorry sorry" for the tragic losses and casualties.

Taiwan Prez Office Web site hacked.

The video is still there al least two hours after being found; that's why it's called "ineffective". See if you're lucky enough to have a look before it's gone: http://bit.ly/1n77L

The complete video:
